Readers have been responding to my month-long experiment in technological regression: I’ve decided to replace my stolen iPhone, for a spell, with an old-fashioned Alcatel feature phone. My hope was to reclaim a corner of my life as saner and less constantly connected. So far, the experiment hasn’t been going great; as I mentioned in my last post on the topic, I miss my iPhone quite a bit. I whined about the indignities of having to type out SMS’s on nine number keys, for instance.

The “quantified self” movement might need a new name. Enthusiasts are now tracking not just themselves but the trillions of bacteria that live in and on their bodies. 

In the wake of Instagram’s recent change to its Terms of Service, I challenged someone/anyone to clone the app and charge for it, a la App.net. But wouldn’t it just be easier to fold Instagram’s filtering and editing features into a photo application or social network that already exists? Why yes, it would be. Twitter and Flickr have already done just that, and Aviary is the company whose technology powers these bolted-on features.
